The Badass Zone is dead

My deepest apologies to all visitors of the Badass Zone. This blog is now dead. Maybe it will be revived someday when doctors find the cure for apathy.

Black Canary and Green Arrow by Joe Bowen

Here's Black Canary as a teenage cheerleader for the Star City High Canaries. Ollie Queen is the quarterback for the East Star City High Arrows, the Canaries' rivals. Ollie is TOTALLY into her, but she can't let down her school by dating him! omglolomfg

Ben Affleck

Just kidding. But here's my Daredevil sketch I did while at work the other day. I'm actually doing all the sketches assigned for the BAZone, it just takes me a while to get to a scanner. So I may be posting all of mine late.

Hey everyone!

Ok, so I know that I haven't put up anything yet and I promise I'll get right to that. Things have just been pretty busy over here. But as for this week's challenge I choose...

Dare to be different

I just got my first set of copics, so I wanted this piece to be an experimentation with them. Im starting to get the hang of them a little bit..I did some sketch card samples playing around with them a bit. I wanted to work in my more cartoony style, but didn't want to abandon the kind of approach I took in my Super-man piece. This is a style I enjoy to work in. I like the rain in the b/w piece better, but I don't think the colors ruined the piece. Ink, ink-wash, and copics on 8.5x11 water color paper

Daredevil by Joe Bowen

Yellow Daredevil! I'll admit that the costume here is heavily influenced by Rafael Grampa's version of Daredevil from his pinup in Daredevil #500.

Kingdom Come

Nothing fancy or extraordinary, just felt like sketching and
messing around, I've never drawn the supes from kingdom
come and i thought it would be fun to try to draw an older
superman. I feel like there's a lot of pressure whenever i try
to draw superman, i like this character a lot and if you like a
character a lot you know you have the urge that it has to
be sweet, but whatever, my point here was to play around with the
character's attitude and i really want to focus on this a lot more.

Hope you dig.

Gio.

Kid Superman

I really am not a big fan of superman, so I thought I'd do my own take on this topic.

Red Son

I really liked the Red Son storyline so I decided to draw something from that. I found an old Soviet propaganda poster that has Stalin with a ships wheel and thought it'd be cool to put Superman in there. I ended up having a lot of fun with it. If you haven't read Red Son, go check it out.

Traditional pencils and inks. Digital flats, type, and old paper texture.

The Quest for Peace?

I think I'm one of maybe two people in the world who like Superman IV:  The Quest for Peace.  I grew up with this one, ladies and gentlemen.  I used to watch it every day for at least a year.  Sure, now that I'm older I can see how tired Christopher Reeve is in the role.  And yes, Gene Hackman really hams it up in this one.  And who can forget The Nuclear Mullet, er... I mean Nuclear Man?But it's part of my childhood, people, and I know that the 5 year-old me would love to see this.  So, this is for all two fans of this film.

Enjoy,

Chris

Superman by Joe Ruff

So here's my Superman piece...I hope I'll be able to put Batman in every one.

Bizarro Love

Lois is done with Supes, time for some Bizarro action!

Inspired by the great Silver Age covers.

Damn you, Lex Luthor!

A quick one I did today inspired by the crazy-ass Superman covers from the Silver Age. Why can't the Superman comics of today be more like this?

B&W Lineart, and Colored version, of Superman hanging out in his Fortress of Solitude with the Bottle City of Kandor.

Fleischer Stylie

I've never been a big Superman fan, but I do dig the old 1940's look of Supes. I like this for the most part, but coloring it with prismacolors may have been a mistake! Hope you all dig.

Superman by Joe Bowen

My first thought after I chose Superman for the topic was: lace-up boots. Then I decided to draw a Superman design without referencing ANY other Supermans.

After finishing this, I figured the guy looked too young, so I came up with the story that he is a goverment-engineered Superman to combat the original Superman. The original Superman has gone rogue, and the government has used his DNA to create someone to find him.

Also, he keeps a "kripto-knife" in his thigh sheath to kill Superman when he finally finds him.

In the Zone

This week's theme is Superman, and personally I feel like it's a great starting point. Towards the end of third year I kind of abandoned the brush, so a few weeks ago I decided to pick it back up. Boy am I glad I did, and personally I missed it. I love being able to be free and just do things in the moment. This piece was basically me having fun with brush and nib. Enjoy!
